Remodeling any room in your home can be a big project. Unless you have to remodel because of damage due to storms or fire, remodeling a room in your home is a planned event. You may have been saving for a while or collecting photos and ideas of you liked and wanted to try and incorporate into the space. You may even have a three ring binder with tabs for different ideas for different rooms. All these things are excellent ways to get ready for a remodeling project. “What about them?” you may be wondering. “Hey, this is my project and my dream,” you may be telling yourself. This is also the place your kids call home. A home they feel belongs to them as well so why not involve them with some of the decision making? Make the remodel a family project! Sit down with the kids and explain the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ behind the remodeling project. Show them your notebook with your pictures and ideas. Try your best to communicate with them in a way so they can understand it and can get involved and help you make some of the decisions. Go to the library or bookstore and get out some magazines and books on remodeling and ask your kids what they think. Kids have a way of looking at the world and perhaps even the space you are remodeling, in a way you may not have thought about. That perspective they share may be the idea that makes the space better!

Take the kids, one at a time, to the store to look at tile for the back splash or the appliance store to look at a new refrigerator or stove. Take them to the hardware store to look at drawer pulls and hardware. Take them to the furniture store to look for a new kitchen table and chairs or stools for the eat- in kitchen. Get their input. Ask them for their opinions. Involve them with the project. Each child will feel special and you’ll get to spend some quality one-on-one time with each one.

You've gotten together with your contractor and chosen a start date. Together, you've mapped out a plan and set targeted dates for when certain phases of the project would be completed. The project looks good on paper.

What about the kids?
