Bathrooms are a popular space homeowners love to remodel. Although any remodel can interrupt day to day life a bit, most homes come equipped with a second bathroom so the inconvenience is lessened. A bathroom remodel is not as costly as say, the kitchen, because the space usually smaller. Now that you’ve decided you can’t live with your bathroom another minute consider the following tips for a perfect bathroom renovation.

It looks great in most rooms of the house but wood flooring is not the best choice when it comes to your bathroom floor. If a wood floor is a must have, take precautions by applying more layers of oil based polyurethane and fill the spaces between the boards with more wood putty to avoid water under the floor. Cork and bamboo are naturally resistant to mold and make excellent floor choices. If your bathroom already has tile, chances are there is a layer of concrete under it that will make a sturdy, durable flooring choice by staining and sealing it. Glass tiles can also be used on bathroom floors as well as ceramic and stone tiles.

If you are looking to make sure your bathroom looks as large as possible the key is to choose a lighter the color palette. A good rule thumb for choosing color for any room is to select 3 colors: one neutral, one rich and one accent. The lightest color should be used on 70% of the room, the second lightest on 20% and the accent on 10%. Choose colors from the color wheel that are complimentary (next to one another) or opposing one another on the wheel. You can also use 2 neutral colors for a rich, open feel. Color choices can also be energetic colors, like orange and blue. Don’t avoid the darker richer colors. They make great furniture choices. A darker color choice for a vanity may need to be offset by a white sink and towel choices.

Lighting choices should be functional and aesthetically pleasing. The trend toward chandeliers in a bathroom can add drama and a classic romantic look. You can choose a sconce that compliments your design theme. Many light fixtures today look as though they could be anywhere in the home! If no natural light is available, the amount of light that serves the bathrooms lighting needs is even more important

The bathroom needs to be a plethora of places to store and hide necessary items needed for the space every day. If the remodel includes a new shower, cubbies for shampoo, cream rinse and body soaps are helpful. Cabinets under the sink and sitting on top of the vanity provide storage for towels and sundries. Don’t forget to add well thought out hooks for robes. A recessed medicine cabinet creates much needed place for many of the smaller items that are needed and must be easily within reach but don’t clutter up the vanity.

The bathroom is typically the place where mirrors are the most important element. Don’t just add a mirror to check your make-up and shave consider adding more mirrors to reflect light and open the space. Larger mirrors make a space look dated. You can re-purpose your older larger mirror by having it cut into a few smaller pieces and using a framing kit to finish them or use the same flooring or vanity choice to frame it. An oval mirror will have a softer look or choose a mirror with built in lighting or TV!

The bathroom is one of homeowners favorite places to remodel. With many color and design element choices, make sure you make the most of your project and choose a remodeling professional with experience and a great reputation to help you execute it properly.

Bathrooms are a popular space homeowners love to remodel.
